Number 2 – The Family Cat
This week I have to be very careful, my anonymous partner in crime LOVES the Family Cat and if I was to even write something mildly offensive about them being a middle of the road indie band from Somerset he would throw all his toys out of the pram and stop giving me free music. Seriously, once he refused to give me any more free music until I retracted the phrase ‘Appetite For Destruction is one of the best 20 albums ever made’. So I’m not going to do that.
What about going to tell you all about is my family cat – Goggin. Who is sadly no longer with us. We rescued Goggin from bastard neighbours in around 2004. They were not feeding her, she was rake thin and her coat had picked up a flea infection also one of her eyes was quite badly swollen. At the time we thought she was a stray, and by chance we had a tin of cat food in the fridge due to a hedgehog who was lodging in the shed. Goggin ate the whole tin in about 3 minutes. It was kind of like that scene in Trainspotting when Renton is asked to join in the breakfast at Dianes and then proceeded to eat a lot. Obviously Goggin wasn’t on as much heroin.
Anyway, we took her to the vet, they identified that she was microchipped and we took her back home, they refused to pay the vet bills, grabbed the cat and slammed the door in my face. Three hours later little Goggin was back outside my back door, we never took her back again. I did knock on the neighbours door again and said look you know where she is if you want her, they never turned up. We cared for like she was one of the family. Nine years later at the age of 19 she fell asleep and now nearly eighteen months later I still find it difficult to look at pictures of her. She was a beautiful pet, who made me laugh every day we had her. In the nine years she was never any trouble, even at the end when she had serious kidney problems and I took to sleeping on the floor so that she could have my side of the marital bed.
Obviously animals are going to take a 2 – 0 lead here, as great as the band the Family Cat was, they are nowhere near as wonderful as your pet. The Family Cat were a great band, they never had the success the deserved though. They were a great singles band making single after single of terrific indie guitar pop. They worked really hard and they supported more bands that I care to remember, I saw them FOUR times in six months as a support band for Carter, Cud, Kingmaker and The Cure, on two of those occasions they were far better than the main act, you can probably work out which ones. The public never bought it though, the fan base was massive, but they never bought the singles I think their biggest success was with ‘Wonderful Excuse’ the lead track from their second studio album ‘Magic Happens’. Sadly for them the magic never quite happened.
The track I have posted above in one of my favourite Family Cat songs and we have nicked the name for another one of these series that we have on the blog – A Place With A Name, it was released on Big Cat Records – home to Pavement and Carter at the time of release, they then signed for Dedicated Records and released their debut album proper ‘Furthest From The Sun’ from which I have posted two other records, both of which were singles and featured PJ Harvey.
