Readers, we’ve done a list.
Back at Christmas when Badger and I were floating ideas about re-launching this mess of a blog, we came up with the idea of a ‘Greatest Ever song List’. The problem with this is that it contained too many songs. So we thought about something different – and we both made a play list containing 200 songs that we will never delete off of our iPods. To make this list we set one rule.
- Only one song per band or act
So we had 400 songs – and these 400 songs were going to be the basis for the blog – as most of them were by bands that we love. Then we had the idea of ‘One Song A Day’. So we ditched the 400 songs.
However, at the start of May, Badger had another idea (two in a year, he is lying down), he produced the list and whilst we were away working in Newbury a few weeks ago suggested that we turned this list of 400 songs into one list of songs in order of brilliance and post these songs. So we did. However we cut it down to 200 and with that THE WYCRA 200 was born.
It took us roughly four days, three bottles of rum, two actual fist fights, and one 18” dustbin lid pizza to whittle it down to 200. Of the 400 songs we had chosen – 130 bands featured more than once so we had to choose between us which song was best (hence the fist fights) – only on 18 times did we chose the same song. Ten of those feature in the Top 20.
Oh and then we added a second rule
2. No song already featured as the randomly selected song of the day on WYCRA can feature in this list – so we had to change a few – about seven I think – which gives you some idea as to what a list of songs this is (or the rubbish that we have already posted?)
So please stay with us over the next 200 days (which takes us roughly till Christmas – bloody hell) when we will count them down. We will still do the 11th of the month specials and the specials on the acts at 11 and 111 just because we can. This list will start counting down on June 1st.
Its NOT a list of the ‘Greatest Songs Ever recorded’. It’s just a list of 200 songs that happen to be great. Songs that make me smile, laugh, cry, jump and down with joy. Songs that take me back to an age when I was younger, songs that remind me of marriages, discos, concerts, road journeys and on at least three occasions, funerals. It’s quite a list of songs. It became very difficult to work out why the song at 173 was better than the song at 174 and so on – just take our word for it, don’t judge us on the choices either. We fully accept that at times you will shout “NO” or “YES” or “COME ON, there is no way that Shed Seven should be higher than Mudhoney”. At least once during this countdown you will want to hunt us down as stick forks in our eyes. We will warn you in advance if a left field choice is coming up or a Guilty Pleasure (usually chosen by Badger).
But before then over the next three days – ten songs that we cut at the end. So these are numbers 201 – 210 if you like – although not in any specific order. I know it’s difficult to believe that there are 200 songs better than ‘Lady Love Your Countryside’ but THERE IS!
Ladykillers – Lush – Chosen by Badger – Taken from ‘Lovelife’ LP (1996) – ‘A Punky Blast of Blondie ish New wave brilliance’.
Lady Love Your Countryside – Sleeper – Chosen by SWC – Taken from ‘Smart’ LP (1995) – ‘Anything which takes the Michael out of posho New Wave of New Wave fools S*M*A*S*H deserves its place in this list’
Jump Up – Doldrums – Chosen by SWC – Taken from ‘Egypt EP’ (2012) ‘a ravey romp that rides an irregular, off-kilter pulse and is so good even the band applauds it at the end’.
See you tomorrow
