Number 140 – 40 years of rock history in six breathless minutes
Knights of Cydonia – Muse – Chosen by Badger – Taken from ‘Black Holes and Revelations’ LP (206)
A few years back, Muse came and played a gig in their home town of Teignmouth. It was and remains the single greatest thing to ever happen in that small seaside town in South Devon. Although SWC will say that the New Years Eve fight he witnessed between a man dressed as a chicken and a man dressed as a teletubby was better (New Years Eve in Teignmouth in Fancy Dress Time).
The band ended with ‘Knights of Cydonia’ and it was just immense, at the end Matt Bellamy stood there on stage surveying his surroundings, he had the look of a man who couldn’t quite believe what he had just done. He played six minutes of faultless prog rock to an audience of adoring masses and got away with it. If Rick Wakeman had turned up and done the same thing he would have been chased out of town.
Knights of Cydonia starts with the sound of horses neighing and galloping, then you get laser guns firing and then you get the music, it kind of sounds like the Doctor Who theme if it was set permanently in a spit and sawdust one horse town in the American Desert. Matt Bellamy describes the song and ‘the felling of waking up and trying to fight back, the time you decide that you need to change yourself’. He means it as well, when he warbles ‘No one is going to take me alive….’ you believe him, you fight with him against the forces manipulating human spirit.
‘Knights of Cydonia’ is ridiculous, overblown, utterly ambitious, but ultimately bloody marvellous in every way. And here just to totally make your day is a dubstep remix of it….Yep…Dubstep remix. Thank me later because its ace.
